BINGHAMTON FIGHTS OFF PORT HURON

by Rob Lippolis

Port Huron- The Binghamton Black Bears were able to fight off the Port Huron Prowlers by a final score of 5-3.  A combined six goals between the two teams in the third made for exciting back and forth action, as the Black Bears were able to keep a two-goal cushion for most of the contest.

The Black Bears put pressure on the Prowlers early in the period, but it was Joe Sheppard who stole the show early for Binghamton stopping 13 shots in the first period.  Binghamton sustained plenty of offensive zone time but were unable to find the back of the net in first period.  Binghamton and Port Huron were still searching for the games first goal going into the second period.

Special teams were a topic of discussion in the locker Friday night, and the Black Bears took the message to heart.  On the first power play of the night, Cam Yarwood would get the scoring started.  Tyler Gjurich was credited with a primary assist, extending his point streak to 14-games.  The Black Bears penalty killed off two Prowlers man-up sequences, in the final seconds of the period, Binghamton’s special teams would strike again.

Prowlers’ goalie, Wyatt Hoflin attempted to clear the puck out the zone, but Colan Fitzgerald sniffed out the clearing attempt.  Fitzgerald deked around a defenseman and elevated the puck on his back-hand past Hoflin making 2-0 with just one second left in the middle period.

The Prowlers had a 5-3 twice in the third period, they would convert on both. The first made the score 2-1 but Gjurich would find the back of the net from a low angle to give the Black Bears a two-goal cushion once again.  Dalton Jay cut back into the lead for the Prowlers, but Binghamton answered right back.  Gjurich would score his second of the night, wrapping up his three-point performance, pushing the score to 4-2.

The Black Bears spent a combined 30 minutes in the penalty box Friday, and once again a 5-3 conversion from Port Huron would occur.  With about two minutes left, Jay netted his second of the game making it a one-goal game once again, but Binghamton would have the answer on the next shift.

Jiri Hajda, who already picked up his first point as a Black Bear, sauced a pass to Kirkby in the defensive end, where Tyson was able ice the game away with an empty netter.  Black Bears win 5-3.
