BINGHAMTON SWEEPS ELMIRA, PICKS UP 6 POINTS THIS WEEK

by Rob Lippolis

BINGHAMTON- The Binghamton Black Bears completed the weekend sweep of the Elmira Mammoth Saturday, defeating their in-state rivals 4-2.

Riley McVeigh would get the nod to start in net after his 36 save performance last night.  Elmira would be first to the scoresheet as Yianni Liarakos would score the games first goal on a rebound that McVeigh could not control.  13 minutes into the period, MJ Maerkl would connect a homerun pass to Nikita Ivashkin for a breakaway.  Ivashkin deked the goaltender with a forehand tuck and slid the puck pass Thomas Proudlock to tie the game at 1-1.  Late in the period the Black Bears would take a delay of game penalty and prove to be costly.  Liarakos, once again would score two goals in the same game, just like last night.  Elmira carried a 2-1 advantage into the locker room after 20 minutes.

The Black Bears wasted no time tying the game at 2-2 in the second period.  Jesse Anderson was able to collect a backhand hand pass from Mac Lewis just two minutes into the frame.  After the goal, Elmira started taking more penalties, including a delay of game of their own. That would give Binghamton 1:50 of 5 on 3 time, a gift wrapped present.  The captain, Jake Schultz, would score his first of the season on a power play one-timer that blew pass the goaltender, giving Binghamton a 3-2 advantage.  Elmira had one more power play during the period, but Black Bears used suffocating defense to not allow a shot on goal during the man advantage.  Binghamton outscores Elmira 2-0 in the frame and  led 3-2 after 40.

The only goal of the third period would come off the stick of Gjurich.  With under a minute left in the contest, Gjurich would put the puck in the empty net, sending the game off into the night. McVeigh would earn tonight’s first star and grab consecutive wins in only his third ever professional game.  Black Bears win 4-2.

Binghamton picks up another three points and is now tied with Danbury at the top of the Empire Division with 15.  The Black Bears return home on Nov 11th & 12th for Military Appreciation Weekend presented by Lockheed Martin.
