IVASHKIN TALLIES 5PT NIGHT, BLACK BEARS WIN 7-2

by Rob Lippolis

HARRINGTON, DE- The Binghamton Black Bears defeated the Delaware Thunder by final score of 7-2 on Friday night.  Nikita Ivashkin was able to score his second hat trick of the season, and the team combined for four goals in the final period to ensure their victory on the road.

The Black Bears started the game on the power play for the first time this season.  The Thunder had multiple skaters still on the ice at conclusion of warmups, which resulted in a two-minute bench minor.   While the power play units were able to score, they set the tone early for how the game was going to be played.  Tyson Kirkby got the scoring started at 13:29, Tyler Gjurich was able to extend his point-streak to 43 games with a secondary assist.  Delaware would tie the game at 1-1 on a power play goal with 30 seconds remaining.

Binghamton grabbed the lead again nearing the halfway point of the middle period.  The captain, Jake Schultz, put one between the legs of the goaltender after the Binghamton power play expired.  Ivashkin would tally his first of the night a few minutes later, giving the Black Bears a two-goal lead for the first time on Friday night.  For a moment, it appeared that Binghamton was going to run away with contest early.  However, Delaware was able to answer to cut the deficit down to one before heading into the locker room for the third period.

Two minutes into the third, Ivashkin would knab his second of the game, reclaiming a two-goal lead for the Black Bears.  Binghamton was able to sustain heavy control of the puck in the final period, not allowing Delaware to generate any high-danger chances.  The Thunder were only able to get off five shots on goal in the final 20 minutes.  Ivashkin would secure his third goal of the night, his second hat trick of the year, on an unassisted takeaway at the blue line.  Austin Thompson and Josh Newburg would both score in the final minute of the contest and the Black Bears would cruise to a five-goal victory over Delaware.
