LISKIEWICZ, GJURICH LEAD BLACK BEARS TO 5-2 WIN OVER CAROLINA

by Rob Lippolis

CAROLINA – Owen Liskiewicz made 56 saves and Tyler Gjurich recorded four points as the Binghamton Black Bears defeated the Carolina Thunderbirds on Friday night, 5-2.

Carolina took a 1-0 lead 7:17 into the game on a great shot by Jarett Meyer from the right circle. Meyer took a pass from Declan Conway and lifted a shot over the left shoulder of goaltender Owen Liskiewicz. The goal was Meyer’s fourth of the year with assists from Conway and Dawson Baker and came at 7:17 of the first.

Binghamton responded to tie the game at one courtesy of Josh Newberg. Tyler Gjurich and Newberg were jamming at a loose puck that eventually went in. The goal was Newberg’s 21st goal of the year from Tyler Gjurich and Nikita Ivashkin and tied the game 1-1.

Jarett Meyer scored his second goal of the game on the power play to give the Thunderbirds a 2-1 lead. Meyer took the puck at the right point and sent a shot through traffic and into the net. The goal was Meyer’s fifth of the season at 16:57 of the opening period. The lone assist was credited to Dawson Baker.

Tyler Gjurich set up Geno DeAngelo to tie the game late in the first period. From the right circle, Gjurich hit DeAngelo with a pass and he tapped it by the right leg pad of goaltender Brandon Brown. Binghamton and Carolina went into the first intermission tied at two.

The Black Bears scored two goals in the second period. Just 4:13 into the second, Cam Yarwood scored a highlight-reel goal from his knees. After falling to his knees at the hash marks, Yarwood spun and sent a backhand shot through the legs of Brandon Brown for a 3-2 lead. The goal was Yarwood’s fifth of the year from Tyler Gjurich and Tyson Kirkby.

Gjurich then took advantage of open ice to give Binghamton a two-goal lead. At the far blue line, Gjurich poked the puck to the neutral zone and beat Brandon Brown on the breakaway for his 42nd goal of the year. Kyle Powell collected the lone assist and Binghamton took a 4-2 lead into the third period.

Emil Strom added a goal in the third period in the 5-2 win for the Black Bears. Tyler Gjurich finished with four points and Owen Liskiewicz made 56 saves in the victory.
